How to Improve Typing Accuracy

Updated

Accuracy is the foundation of typing speed. Each error costs you the time to notice it, delete it and retype it — and on a test, a mistyped word adds nothing to your net WPM. Improving accuracy is often the fastest way to a higher score.

Slow down on purpose

Do a few tests at a deliberately relaxed pace, aiming for 100% accuracy. It feels slow, but it retrains your hands to hit the right keys. Gradually speed up while keeping accuracy above 96%.

Find your problem keys

Look at which words end up underlined on your results. Patterns usually emerge — a particular letter pair, a key that's a long reach, or a finger that strays from its home position. Practise words with those combinations specifically.

Use the correct finger for every key

Many errors come from reaching for a key with the 'wrong' finger. Sticking to a consistent finger assignment makes each movement repeatable, and repeatable movements become accurate.

Check your setup

A keyboard at the right height, relaxed shoulders and wrists that don't rest on a hard edge all reduce slips. If you switch between keyboards often, practise on the one you use most.
