What does WPM mean?

WPM stands for words per minute. Because real words vary in length, typing tests treat every five characters (spaces included) as one word. That makes scores comparable between tests that use long words and tests that use short ones.

This test reports two speeds. Net WPM rewards accuracy: only words typed exactly right count. Raw WPM shows how fast your fingers moved regardless of mistakes. A big gap between the two means accuracy, not speed, is what is holding you back.

How does your WPM compare?

Most adults who type regularly score somewhere around 35–45 WPM. Above 60 WPM is comfortably fast for office work, and above 80 WPM puts you well ahead of most people. Competitive typists regularly exceed 120 WPM on short tests.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good WPM?

Around 40 WPM is average. 60+ WPM is good for most jobs, and 80+ WPM is considered fast.

Does accuracy affect my WPM?

Yes. Words with a mistake don't count toward net WPM, so improving accuracy is often the quickest way to raise your score.

How many tests should I take?

Take three to five and look at the average. Single results vary a lot depending on the words you happen to get.
