A speed test built for quick retries
Speed improves through repetition, so this test is designed to restart instantly. Press Escape at any time to get a fresh set of words, or Enter on the results screen to go again. Your best score for each test length is saved in your browser so you can see when you beat it.
Time, words or quotes
Time mode gives you a fixed number of seconds — 15, 30, 60 or 120 — and is the standard way to compare speeds. Words mode gives you a fixed number of words (10, 25, 50 or 100) and times how long you take. Quote mode gives you a passage from classic public-domain literature, with capital letters and punctuation, which is closer to real-world writing. Turn on punctuation to add capitals, commas and full stops, or numbers to mix digits in with the words — useful practice for the shift key and the top row of the keyboard.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take the test on my phone?
Yes, the test works with on-screen keyboards, but scores are designed around physical keyboards, so phone results aren't directly comparable.
